Steel diamond plate with raised treads
A procedural diamond plate material for Blender: industrial steel tread plate with pointed raised ribs, mottled steel, rust, grime, scratches and wear. It comes in four presets, Weathered Steel, Clean Steel, Rusted Steel and Painted Wear, all driven by one editable node group. It is built entirely from shader nodes with no image textures, and it uses UV coordinates, so the treads follow your unwrap.
The gallery shows each preset on the 57 cm sample sphere, Weathered Steel on a flat 72 cm panel, and the studio scene with a panel and a sphere. The ribs are real displacement in Cycles. At the default Scale of 6 cells per UV tile, a 330 mm panel gets a 55 mm pitch with ribs about 48 x 8 mm, raised 3 mm.
Features:
- Four diamond plate materials driven by one Diamond Plate – Controls node group
- Scale, Rotation, Rib Length, Rib Width and Rib Height for the tread pattern and its physical relief
- Steel Color, Roughness and Weathering for the base metal
- Rust Amount, Rust Color, Dust Amount and Dust Color for corrosion and grime
- Edge Wear to polish the rib crowns, plus Scratches and Pitting for fine surface detail
- Paint Amount and Paint Color for an optional chipped paint layer
- Seed to change the weathering without moving the tread pattern
- Displacement and bump in Cycles, or Bump Only for a lightweight surface
- Height, Rust Mask and Roughness Map outputs for custom setups or baking
- The four materials and the control group are marked as assets, ready for the Asset Browser
How to use it:
- Append a material with File > Append > Material > Diamond Plate – Weathered Steel (or another preset), or drag it from the Asset Browser.
- UV unwrap your mesh with consistent texel density. A square UV island on a square panel keeps the tread proportions. For rectangles, scale the UV layout to match the aspect ratio.
- Apply your object’s scale (Ctrl + A > Scale) before adjusting Rib Height.
- For raised treads, render in Cycles on a finely subdivided mesh. For a lightweight surface, set Material Properties > Settings > Surface > Displacement to Bump Only.
- For game engines, bake the material onto your final model’s UVs, because procedural nodes do not export through FBX or OBJ.
Perfect for:
- Floors, stairs, ramps and walkways
- Truck beds, trailers and toolboxes
- Factories, warehouses and sci-fi corridors
- Game environments and industrial props
Pair it with Procedural Aluminium or Damaged Dark Steel for more industrial metal.
Included Files:
- Blender project (.blend) with the four Diamond Plate materials and the Diamond Plate – Controls node group
- Three ready-to-render scenes: a 57 cm sample sphere, a 72 cm flat panel with a solid steel edge, and a studio shot with both, each with its own camera and area lights, no HDRI needed
- Dense sample panels (about 230,000 faces each) so the treads have a real raised edge
- Fully procedural, with no image textures or external files
- Created in Blender 5.2
