Procedural Moss – Blender Material

Dense, curly moss with soft cushions and real displacement

A procedural moss material for Blender: dense, curled yellow-green fibers over a dark olive bed, grouped into soft moss cushions. It is built entirely from shader nodes and uses object coordinates, so it needs no image textures or UVs, and the pattern has no stretched direction.

The gallery shows the default Moss – Forest material on the 40 cm sample sphere and the 36 cm flat swatch, a wet look made by raising Moisture from 0.1 to 1.0, and a fine look with Fibre Size lowered from 1.8 mm to 0.8 mm. In Cycles, the default Displacement Amount of 0.45 adds real surface relief on subdivided meshes.

Features:

  • One Moss – Controls node group, with Scale and Seed for the overall pattern
  • Moss Color, Tip Color and Shadow Color for the foliage, the brighter tips and the dark bed underneath, plus Color Variation
  • Fibre Size (mm), Fibre Width, Curliness and Density to shape the fine curled growth
  • Clump Size (cm) for the soft moss cushions
  • Fibre Relief (mm) and Clump Relief (mm) for fine and broad relief
  • Displacement Amount from 0 (bump only) to 1 for real surface relief in Cycles
  • Roughness, plus Moisture to darken and smooth the moss for a wet look
  • Base Color, Roughness, Normal, Height and Fibre Mask outputs for custom setups or baking
  • The material and the control group are marked as assets, ready for the Asset Browser

How to use it:

  1. Append the material with File > Append > Material > Moss – Forest, or drag it from the Asset Browser.
  2. Apply your object’s scale (Ctrl + A > Scale). Sizes are in meters and use object coordinates, so no UVs are needed.
  3. For real relief in Cycles, use a subdivided mesh. On a low-poly object, set Displacement Amount to 0 for bump-only shading. Eevee shows the bump only.
  4. For game engines, bake the material onto your final model’s UVs, because procedural nodes do not export through FBX or OBJ.

Perfect for:

  • Rocks, stones and tree trunks in forest scenes
  • Old walls, roofs, statues and ruins
  • Garden, park and nature environments
  • Close-up nature renders and game environments

Pair it with Realistic Procedural Concrete for mossy old walls, or Procedural Realistic Wood for logs and planks.

Included Files:

  • Blender project (.blend) with the Moss – Forest material and its node group
  • A 40 cm sample sphere and a 36 cm flat swatch, already subdivided for displacement, with a camera and softbox lighting, no HDRI needed
  • Fully procedural, with no image textures or external files
  • Created in Blender 5.2
